215 years does not seem like a long time.
But that was when John Ericsson was born on July 31, 1803
He lived a full life, and died on March 8, 1889.
But in his lifetime, his effect on Propeller Design, Steam Power at Sea, and the Revolving Turret revolutionized sea power in the mid-1800s.
He truly was a great inventor and an Agile Thinker.
We in Philadelphia note his accomplishments, as did President Lincoln who embraced his revolutionary designs and forced the Department of the Navy to listen to him.
His statue in Philadelphia flanks the statue of George Washington at Eakins Oval.
