Event Description

January 30, 1835  - the first American Assassination was  attempted.  Richard Lawrence tried to take the life of President Andrew Jackson.

A bevy of noted American personalities were involved in his apprehension.   Davy Crockett was present during the shooting.  Francis Scott Key prosecuted Lawrence.

In a strange twist of fate, both of Lawrence's pistols succumbed to moisture and misfired.

In 1865, when John Wilkes Booth assasinated President Abraham Lincoln at the theater, Booth refilled his pistol in the afternoon with fresh gunpowder to avoid this problem.
