Event Description

It was on this date in 1865 that Dr Mary Walker received from President Andrew Johnson the Medal of Honor for her medical service in the field during the Civil War.

She is the only female to do so - though she was not an officer in military service.

She was a contracted doctor for the Union Army.

She did dress in Union Blue Skirt over her slacks.

And was imprisoned in Richmond and lost vision in one eye due to the deplorable conditions of the prison.
