Long time member and prior presenter Charlie Villare and Joe Berner of Cerner will be talking about
The 5 principles of Kanban are visualization, improve collaboration, explicit policies, limit work in progress (WIP) and manage flow. All five principle are critical to success. Teams seem to do well with the first 3 principles. Setting and adhering to WIP Limits is a proven technique for ensuring quality and achieving project dates, and yet many teams find this one a challenging. Managing flow involves good adherence of the other 4 principles.
The costs incurred when these principles are not followed are wide and far reaching. Teams often focus on improving cycle times as they see this as a means of reducing costs – and it is. However, there are many other practices that can negatively affect the cost of your projects. Things like quality, context switching, building on top of large amounts of untested code, flow inefficiencies and process flaws are a few of these hidden costs. During the session we’ll review all of these challenges. We’ll discuss best practices around WIP guidelines. Suggestions on how to establish WIP Limits, and when/how to change limits will be offered. - We’ll explore the costs of not following these principles and the effect on individuals, teams and the program. Finally, we’ll review some key metrics used to track WIP and help teams improve their flow efficiency. And thank you to our Food Sponsor for this meeting Cerner.
