Agile History Series
Many people involved in the agile practices community are unaware that much of what they’re doing is not really new. Sure, agile practices have been most prevalent since the publishing of the Agile Manifesto in 2001. However, the roots of agile go much further back in history. The true father of these approaches was a man named W. Edwards Deming. Deming has a very interesting background as the person that taught the Japanese the core concepts of statistical process control and continuous improvement techniques. Companies that are know as the innovators in Lean, including Toyota, Honda, Sony, and Panasonic actually learned these techniques from Deming. His visits to Japan to teach the industrial leaders how to rebuild after WWII began in 1950. One of the core tenants of these teachings that finally hit the US in the 1980’s was Deming’s 14 Points for Management. In this talk, I will review Deming’s history, review the 14 Points for Management, conduct the famous Red Bead Experiment with participants, and discuss the connection to what we’re all doing today. One of the most important aspects of moving forward with change is understanding the past.
Bob Schatz is a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) and founder/CEO of Agile Infusion, LLC.
