Abstract:

Today's workers are motivated by more than money.
In olden times, that might have shown up as creating bonds in the company baseball team or bowling team. Now, it may be workers participating in hackathons and collaborations on Open Source projects outside the organization.

One modern attitude is that while making money is nice, the feeling of working toward a greater good becomes the driver for today's information worker.  And avenues internal to the company and outside may be in play for these workers.  Corporate mission statements reflecting this are in flux - even Google's 2001 motto and formative watchword "Don't Be Evil" has taken some hits lately, and two weeks ago, Google indicated they may change it, drop it, or expand it.  Washington Post Article of Nov 3rd athttp://wapo.st/1xXKzv3

After presentations of what some local companies are doing, and seeing the avenues that companies big and small can explore, we will have an open discussion to brainstorm how these and other areas of community giveback apply to our own workers and our own environments.

One such company doing good in the community is our good Friend of AgilePhilly, VertexInc.com, and we encourage more local companies to step up and tell the group about their own accomplishments.  We think this topic will generate continued discussions within the workplace in the current Holiday Season.

Presenters:  Tracy Welson-Rossman of Chariot Solutions who is a founder of TechGirlz will present her "TechShopz in a Box" - - It is a way of getting companies involved in middle-school & high-school STEM areas.  Also, the Chester County Economic Development Council who staged "Techies-Day" on Wed Oct 10th, of which Vertex Inc participates by sharing time with area high-school students.  Other participants include Bentley, Vanguard, AGI, and Unisys.
